Incoming attachments

I am a writer and a new user of Abiword, which I downloaded in order
to open old Word Perfect .wpd files that otherwise my iMac G5 can't
open.
However, now whenever someone sends me a file in .doc format or other
format, Abiword -- without my asking! -- opens up the document. I
can't get around it. I have checked with the senders, and they did
not send the attachment in Abiword. So how can I get Abiword to butt
out? Abiword's rendition of the document is more ragged than I like
-- strange spacings, etc. It is a blessing when I cannot otherwise
open a document, but otherwise.....
If anyone can help me, I offer many thanks. If you can keep it
simple, I offer even more thanks -- I am a non-technie, and an old
lady to boot.
