Hi Molly --
James is exactly right - your Mac is confused about what program to use
when opening .doc files.
Here's how to fix the problem:
        • Select any .doc file by clicking on it once using the mouse.
        • Then use the mouse to click on "File" in the menu bar at the top of
your screen, and choose "Get Info". This brings up a display window.
        • Look for "Open with" in the display window. You may have to click
the triangle widget next to those words to see the details.
        • AbiWord will be listed as the default.
        • Click on that button that lists AbiWord - it's a pull-down menu.
        • Choose Microsoft Word.
        • Then click on the "Change All" button, so that all .doc files open
with Microsoft Word by default.
