To put it another way, no, you're not barking up the wrong tree at all, but
you may need to bark up another tree first. :-)
AbiWord interactive spell checking was designed to support any ispell
dictionary, but we have very little ispell-specific expertise. If you can
use the ispell tools to create a Latin dictionary, then that dictionary
should Just Work in AbiWord.
