Subject: Abiword on Xterminals

Hi:
This probably isn't new and unknown...but I cannot run Abiword on Linux
Xterminals. I'll explain:
I'm using a Linux pc (i686) for a central file and print server and
occasional workstation. This unit boots to the xdm graphical login
prompt. KDE is the window manager and Abiword is one of the
applications installed on this box. Abiword is started by simply typing
"abiword" in a terminal window.
I have several Linux pc's (i486) set up as Xterminals off this server.
They are not "diskless workstations" because they have small hard drives
to boot from. Most have only a very minimal installation of Linux and
don't have window managers installed (although a couple do). These
machines boot to the xdm login prompt on the central file server merely
by having the line <X -quiet -query "server"> added to their /rc.local
file.
I can sit down at the file server and run Abiword just fine. If I kill
the Xterminal function on the two i486 machines that have KDE installed,
and run them as hosts, they run Abiword, too. (These two boxes have
Abiword installed on them.) But none of the i486 machines can bring up
Abiword on the file server as Xterminals. When I try, I get the
following error message:
"Abiword could not load the following font from the X window System
display server :
[-*-Times New Roman-regular-r-*-*-*-0-*-*-*-*-*-*]
This is then followed by text offering possible explanations, but
unfortunately, I don't know enough about Abiword, Linux, or computers to
have a clue as to what any of it means!
Any how, I thought I'd pass this on, for what it is worth. I was sort
of hoping I could use Abiword for most of our office word processing
(mostly very short business letters) because, while I may not know
anything about computers, I do know that when Xterminals begin to thrash
when they open Star Office, Star Office uses way too much core memory
and bandwidth to be a good networked word processor...
Hoping for a breakthrough,
Colin Mattoon
