Opening Abiword

I am using Windows XP, and have just downloaded AbiWord Version 2.8.1 from
the AbiWord website. Would somebody please tell me how to open it!! Windows
doesn't recognise the file. I know there are programs on the web which will
do this but before using one of those, I would rather follow the path of
someone else who has had this problem and solved it successfully without
problems.
