Default file format

I'm a new user of AbiWord.

Is there a way to set the default file format that
AbiWord documents are saved in to DOC or RTF format?

When I save files in ABW format, they open in other
editors and word processors with all the XML
formating. This happened when I tried opening an ABW
file with Open Office, Scite, WordPerfect, CwordPad,
and Microsoft Works didn't open it at all.

I use Windows XP, version 2.4.6 of AbiWord, and
downloaded AbiWord from abisource.com.
