I will assume that you are using Windows (XP?).
If you have installed successfully, as you say, there should be an
abiword.exe, located at e.g.
c:\program files\abisuite2\abiword\bin\abiword.exe

Search/Navigate to this abiword.exe, Rightclick --> Send to --> Desktop
(as shortcut), and you will have a shortcut on your desktop.

I have installed my newer Abiword versions over the existing one from
days of yore without any problems, so I think there should be no problem
either in reinstalling Abi, with the Startfolder option checked, with or
without uninstalling first.
