If you use AbiWord and want to send a document to someone without it,
there are two options. You can either go to File, Save As, and change
the file type to a common interchange format, like RTF (Rich Text
Format), much as you would do if you had to transfer a Word document
from one version to another, or to another program. Otherwise, since
AbiWord is open-source and free, your recipient is free to install the
program on their own computer.

If you have received an AbiWord document (one that ends in .ABW), the
easiest way to open it is to simply install AbiWord. It is a free
download that contains no spyware or viruses, and is safe for your
computer. This is the most straightforward way. You could also
(because of the special structure of the ABW format) open the file in
Notepad, if all you wanted was the text, and extract it manually, but
usually this is not worth the effort unless a problem with your computer
prevents you from loading the file in AbiWord. The person who sent you
the document could also Save As in the RTF format or any other format
that we have an exporter for.

Hope this helps!
