I exchanged several letters with Marc about the subject.
This is the summary up to date:
1. There is no "Equation" under "Insert" and no Equation editor
    in Tools -> Plugin
2. In .AbiSuite/AbiWord.Profile there are the following lines:
     <!-- [Tue 31 Jan 2006 05:13:05 PM IST] message:
  XAP_ModuleManager::loadModule - (L119): loading
  /usr/lib/AbiWord-2.4/plugins/libAbiMathView.so -->
          <!-- [Tue 31 Jan 2006 05:13:05 PM IST] message:
  XAP_ModuleManager::loadModule - (L158): failed to load
  /usr/lib/AbiWord-2.4/plugins/libAbiMathView.so -->
          <!-- [Tue 31 Jan 2006 05:13:05 PM IST] message:
  XAP_ModuleManager::loadModule - (L164): error msg
  /usr/lib/AbiWord-2.4/plugins/libAbiMathView.so: undefined symbol:
  _ZNK4Area7getStepEv -->
          <!-- [Tue 31 Jan 2006 05:13:05 PM IST] message:
  XAP_ModuleManager::loadModule - (L119): loading
  /usr/lib/AbiWord-2.4/plugins/libAbiLaTeX.so -->
3. I tried to uninstall and reinstall:
  # rpm -e gtkmathview abiword
  # yum install abiword
  ....
  Installed: abiword.i386 1:2.4.2-1.fc4
  Dependency Installed: gtkmathview.i386 0:0.7.6-1.fc4
  Complete!
but it did not change the situation. As you see the OS is Fedora 4.
