Success. The secret was to (a) go to helix and got a fresh gnome
desktop -- absolutely f***ing amazing stuff there guys THANKS for the
concept, which makes me feel like I can now forget all the stuff I was
starting to learn about system administration :-) but then (b) it still
didn't work -- but at least now it knew why. The XFree86 4.0 jinx --
abiword gave me what that second empty box was supposed to contain; the
news that I needed to load the type1 fonts in my xf86config. But the
three lines that are recommened:
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
Load "speedo"
caused my server to crash, presumably because I didn't bother to build
all three modules. Anyway, I commented out freetype and speedo, and the
thing now goes.
Doesn't correctly read the word document that my colleague sent me, but
that is an entirely different kettle of fish.
thanks again everyone -- and maybe AbiSource could make the executable a
bit more verbose on the command line when it crashes? Just my $.02
