Thanks for the many replies -- all of which said "it should work"!
But it doesn't. Just to check, I deleted /usr/local/Abisuite and the
link to it in /usr/local/bin and then I installed the rpm with

> rpm -Uvh abisuite-0.7.11-1.i386.rpm

That put a link in /usr/bin/X11 and installed abisuite in
/usr/share/abisuite.

> abiword
Then produced the happy ant spash page and the two grey windows (for a
flash) before the crash.

I thought this was the Old Way, and the New Way puts it in
/usr/local/AbiSuite, so I
removed the package with rpm -e abisuite and installed again using the
static binaries I got from the AbiSource site ('cause I don't understand
about Helix). Needless to say, that didn't work either (the ant is
replaced with the plain preview release 0.7 splash, which may tell us
what version this is, since I can't find a version option). So I tried
the dyamic binaries, which had the same null result. Just for kicks I
tried 0.7.10-1 from the rpm of that name, and got the boring splash page
and a crash -- the two grey windows had different geometries before they
dissappeared! Cool.

I'm not sure what info is needed to figure out why this doesn't work.
I'm running RHL 6.2 (kernel 2.2.14-5.0) - from the aarnet mirror iso
images - and XFree86 4.0.1 from i don't remember where.

Any troubleshooting tips greatly appreciated!

thanks again,
mike
