Hi:

I've posted to this list before regarding problems I had running Abiword
on PCs configured as Xterminals, where Abiword and all the user
directories were located on a central file and application server. In
short, Abiword would begin to load, and then report that it couldn't find
the necessary fonts and exit.

A number of responses directed me toward XFS and some specific
configurations -- but I'm either too ignorant to make them work -- or
different Linux distributions require some subtle "tweaking" that I am
unaware of.

But then, I recently tried something that I believe will work without
regard to the distribution -- at least it has worked so far for me. If the
PC configured as an Xterminal has a few spare megabytes on the hard drive,
simply install Abiword (static.tar.gz version) on the Xterminal
machine. You might want to also enter the "ldconfig" command as soon as
you install. Even if the Xterminal doesn't have a floppy drive or an FTP
client installed, as long as it is capable of mounting the server's hard
drive as an NFS partition under /mnt, you can copy the file to the
Xterminal. It is installed, but you don't actually run the application.

Then, when you invoke Abiword (on the server, but via the Xterminal, the
exported Abiword session finds the fonts it needs on the Xterminal's hard
drive, but all processing and file storage takes place on the server --
just as if you were running Wordperfect or StarOffice.

Not very elegant, but it appears to be working OK, and since others have
reported similar problems, I thought I would waste everyones time with
this "quick and dirty" solution.
