Actually, this shouldn't be necessary, but it's a novel fix.  :)
AbiWord was loading the Helvetica font (with the 'a' on the end)
assuming it will already be installed by your X server.  I know Red Hat
6.0 has changed the way some of their fonts are installed (all are
through a font server now instead of local X server font paths). 
This shouldn't pose a problem, but it's conceivable that the font I'm
looking for is now installed as something else.  I've logged a bug
(for me, of course) on this.
