As Bob has mentioned this behavior is a known bug, and we're currently 
trying to locate an ispell expert to help us fix it.

Actually, this may look wrong and still be correct.  We store all entries in 
the custom.dic file using the UTF-8 character encoding.  If you look at that 
file using most text editors, it'll look wrong.  
To see what's actually been stored there, make a copy of custom.dic, rename 
that copy with a .utf8 suffix, and then open it up in AbiWord.  If the 
contents match what you typed in the original document, then the custom 
dictionary should work just fine.  
If it doesn't match, then we have another bug.  :-(

trying to do their best to make this product multilingual.  As you've 
noticed, we could still use a little help from a few talented developers who 
are used to working with non-ASCII character sets.  If you know anyone like
