Is it just the static binary that is failing the link? If so, you can
safely ignore it (you only need the dynamic binary). To build so
AbiWord doesn't even try to link the static binary, you can do
"make UNIX_CAN_BUILD_STATIC=0".

If it's a problem with the dynamic linker, you might have some X
development packages missing. I'm using potato on two Intels and
a PowerPC and haven't seen this message.
