hats in lartex math equation

Hi. I would like to use the abiword latex equation option to enter an equation involving hats (carets) over greek letters. This seems only to produce a red box where the hat should be. The command I am using is \hat{\Psi} for exsample. This produces a Psi with a red box where the hat should be. Other overlining seems to work e.g. \vec{\Psi}. Can you help? Thanks
