Hi Haines,
Sorry to hear of your problems with footnotes. As Andy
has said, this is fixed in the development version of abiword. If you
run abiword on windows I suggest you try version 2.7.10 available for
download and easy installation on windows.

Unfortunately the plethora of linux distros makes providing binaries
for Linux too hard for us.
Otherwise, I know what you mean about latex. I use it for academic
publications too.
