I'm curious about what you'd expect to happen if you sorted the table of
contents--presumably you just want the headings in the table of
contents sorted alphabetically (or something) but with the page number
references left intact?

(I mean, you're not looking for the entire document to reorganize itself
so the headings show up in your desired sort sequence, right?)

Not having used abiword very much recently, I would expect that you
could accomplish the first goal by copying and pasting the table of
contents to an editor with sorting, capability, sorting it there, then
pasting it back into abiword. You'd have to reformat the table
appropriately...
