Downloading User Manual

I've just successfully downloaded AbiWord in the hope of getting rid of
the hopelessly buggy MS Word.
I like the look of AbiWord but I don't know how to get the spell-checker
to work. I use Windows XP SP3.
 I downloaded AbiWord_Dictionary_British.exe and ran it. but the program
doesn't recognize it and Check Spelling is greyed out in the Tools menu.
Can anyone give me a plain English explanation of how to solve the
problem please?
I've rebooted my PC to no avail and have searched the website and the
last few months' archives - but the few relevant pages are
incomprehensible to me as an average PC user.
