You can find out the codes by looking at the Character Map. (In XP, it's Start > All Programs> Accessories > System Tools > Character Map.) Find the character you want and click on it. You can Select and Copy from the Character Map, but you don't want to open the Character Map every time you need a character. After you click on the character you want, look at the lower section of the Character Map window (i.e., the Status Bar). The left side will give you the Unicode code point (which you probably don't care about) and the formal name of the character (such as Latin Small Letter E With Grave). On the right will give you the keyboard shortcut to type the letter (such as Keystroke: Alt+0232). So here's how to use the keystroke...
On a laptop keyboard you may have to adjust these procedures a bit to make them work, but on a full-sized keyboard, make sure NumLock is activated. Hold down the Alt key and keep it depressed while pressing the number keys. DON'T use the number keys at the top of the keyboard; you must use the number pad to the right of the keyboard. In the case of the e with grave, the code is "0232". Mathematically, 0232 is the same as 232, but in this case the zero is required. So, while holding the Alt key, press 0 2 3 2 on the keypad, then release the Alt key. The letter will appear when you release the Alt key.
à = Alt+0224
è = Alt+0232
é = Alt+0233
ê = Alt+0234
î = Alt+0238
« = Alt+0171
» = Alt+0187
That's not all of them, but that'll get you going.
