Hi James,
               Actually, while there is plugin that enables people to
write their own keybindings, which is certainly useful, there are also
a whole set of VI (and emacs!) keybindings already built into AbiWord.

I haven't followed them or know how well maintained they are, but here
is a post from way back in 2000 that describes how to enable them.

http://abiword.com/mailinglists/abiword-dev/00/December/0535.html

Here is the text from uber hacker Joaquin Cuenca Abela:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
There is a bug in the user faq

http://www.abisource.com/faquser.phtml#2.8
states that you can enable vi and emacs keybindings
pressing F12, and that is not more true (it was a
"bug").

Could somebody fix the faq? It should say something
like: "you need to hack your AbiWord.profile, adding
something like that:

<Scheme
        name="_custom_"
        KeyBindings="emacs"
        KeyBindingsCycle="1"
        />

These lines will enable the cycling of keybindings
with the F12 key, and sets the emacs keybindings by
default."

(but, of course, in english :)

Cheers,

---------------------------------------------------------

So if you put that code into your <username/.AbiSuite/AbiWord.Profile
file, and press "F12" twice you should have VI keybindings.

Let us know if it works!

Cheers

Martin
