font spacing and characters look bad

Hello,

I've just installed abiword and am using Mac OS 10.3.9. The font
spacing is off. It leaves gaps. Also when I enlarge or reduce the
size of the page, the spacing on the font is off. Some of the letters
don't look right either. When I preview to print, some letters turn
into weird characters.

What's going on and how do I fix it?

I'm attaching a screen shot of what the problem looks like.
