Gosh David, this is a stumper.

Maybe it's a bug. But I've tussled with the "modify template"
process until I thought I'd go buggy...then found it was some simple
step I was missing. It's great for you to hang in there without easily
giving up and going elsewhere for a word processor (this helps Abiword
get better).

On the other hand, this may be a Mac issue that I can't help with at
all. One suggestion, though: In Linux you can create a new "normal.awt"
in your home directory rather than in the system directory. This is
what I did (by creating a subdirectory called "templates" and then
creating a new "normal.awt" in that subdirectory). If you've already got
a "normal.awt" that is saving your modifications, you might try placing
that in your own home/user directory--assuming you have such a thing in
the Mac OS.

Otherwise I'm not sure why you'd have a good "normal.awt" that is not
opening when you open a new Abiword doc. It seems that there'd be a
simple explanation for this.
