open thesaurus

I read somewhere that the AbiWord people maintain an open-source
thesaurus? Can anyone tell me something about that? If I want to
pull data from that thesaurus through a Yahoo widget, is it possible?
Is there an API? I did a quick Google search, and it seems like there
are surprisingly few public thesaurus resources. Strange. Thanks for
