I can only speak for the Unix version of AbiWord here.

AbiWord uses the Gnome Print library for printing to PostScript and
PDF. Gnome Print generates standards-compliant PDF. The PDF it
generates is sub-optimally large. For example, it doesn't Flate or LZW
encode the PDF's streams, preferring ASCII-85 encoding instead.

Gnome Print embeds subsetted TTF or T1 fonts in all of its output.

Gnome Print uses a sRGB colorspace. It doesn't know about CMYK, LAB,
HSV, etc... But then, neither does AbiWord.

I don't know of anyone who is sending AbiWord-generated PDFs to a
publishing house. But I do know of a large number of users who use
AbiWord to print mail-merged form letters.

Hope that helps,
Dom
