This could be the thing!  I recall Word 97 crashing when my default 
printer was unavailable (network printer with no network) - Windows 
generally doesn't handle missing printers too well.  I'd definitely 
suggest giving PDFCreator a shot.  Unfortunately, Windows printing is a 
bit of a black art, so tracking down these kinds of problems is kind of 
tricky.
