Given the difficulty you have had with this so far I would strongly advise
you to pick a user friendly distribution with prebuilt packages.

In general the standard build instructions are as follows:
./configure
make
make install

There are instructions on how to download a tarball or download the source
directly from CVS on the website
http://www.abisource.com/developers/download.phtml

There do not appear to be instructions on how to build abiword directly on
the website but the above generic instuctions are what you need and they
are included in the tarball in a file called BUILD.TXT (which actually
points to another file abi/docs/build/BUILD.TXT)
