Upgrading Linux Abi

Greetings all,

Good to see that Abiword 2.4.5 is out.

I have one question about upgrading the Linux version of Abiword: Do
most Linux users remove Abiword before upgrading? I've used the Windows
version for a long time and have always thoroughly uninstalled previous
versions before upgrading. I think this has been strongly recommended.
Lately, though, I've been relying on Abiword 2.4.4 running on Mepis
Linux. It runs very well and I want to keep up to speed with the latest
versions. But uninstalling in Linux can wreak havoc. I've downloaded the
latest autopackage of Abi 2.4.5 and it has installed without removing
2.4.4. (maybe because I installed the previous version through the Mepis
repositories?). Each has its own executable, and I seem to be able to
call up and use either one.

Soon I'll be upgrading my version of Mepis and will be doing a clean
install of the latest Abiword. But for future reference, what's the
position on getting rid of earlier Linux versions?
