Not all hypens and ellipses are created equal.

Special characters are being used. To preserve them special tables of
conversions would need to be added ot abiword. Smart quotes are a better
known example of such troublesome characters.

they have already done the conversion

if you can file bug reports with detailed examples and sample files there
is a better chance of a developer taking a look at it.
