If you configure it that way.
You can even configure the time factor.
You may find an investigation of the pull down menus on the overhead
bars interesting sometime.
Options like 'preferences' cater to preferences.

You always save the last take, yes, even in the magnificent Word,
because you might not have reached your next time preset when you
close.

To achieve functionality it might pay to explore the function options.
I don't think, from what you say, that you have discovered any of the
power it can offer as a word processor.
If you find Abiword a challenge, please allow me to refer you to
LaTeX, or perhaps, Groff.
