I agree with Dom here. I a not a programmer, so I have no in depth
knowledge about ODF, but I am skeptically how it will work. The approaches
of the different word processors are, well, different. Just look at KWord
and Abiword! Both are great on their own, but they have different aim and
goals. Never the less, I hope it will surprise me. :)

The real funny thing is that everyone can install Abiword, KWord and
OpenOffice on their machine and with that everyone can at least view the
document in its original format (of course, if we assume that appropriate
fonts, etc, are on the machine). In today's world the space on the hard
drives are sufficient and not to expensive. Unfortunately, MS Word is
expensive to buy so no one can guarantee that anyone has purchased it, or
demand from anyone to buy it and/or install it.

I like Abiword, because it simple and easy to use for those who are not
computer wizards (like my Mom) and for those who have no need for so many
advanced features. I, for example, use mostly KWord, because I like its
layout, but I have no problem with using Abiword if someone is working in
it.

I usually copy the corresponding word processors on a CD and give it as a
gift to my friends or who did not have it. Many stick with open source
solutions after they use it for a time.
