Page Size not sticking

I am finding when using 2.2.7 (on W98SE) with two or three columns that
page size is not sticking, e.g. set to A4 landscape, do some work, perhaps
insert picture or text box, then page size suddenly reverts to 'custom' as
a square page having the shorter dimension of A4. Sometimes, just clicking
show/hide button is sufficient to trigger the change.

I have been helping a friend to use AbiWord (on XP) and she sees the same
problem.

I have looked in the bug list but have not found anything identical so
far. I have not been able to find a simple action that makes it happen all
the time but it's so fundamental, I feel sure it must have been discovered
and investigated already. Ideas?
