Yes, you need the AbiMathView plugin, which can be installed from the 
tools plugin package: 
http://www.abisource.com/downloads/abiword/2.4.1/Windows/abiword-plugins-tools-2.4.1.exe 
You may also want to install mathml fonts for better looking equations: 
http://web.mit.edu/atticus/www/mathml/mit-mathml-fonts-1.0-fc1.msi
