I had a similar problem with 2.2.9 on XP - I think it may relate to
regional settings.

Changes to normal.awt only showed up when specifically using the
File>New From Template>normal method. AbiWord seems to entirely ignore
normal.awt unless I explicitly choose it as a template.

I hand-modified templates\normal.awt-en_AU (because I'm in Australia) to
what I wanted as the default document setup when launching AbiWord. The
file for you is possibly templates\normal.awt-en_GB, but that's a guess.

Note that the file contains the message: "You should not edit this file
by hand." Nothing terrible happened to me, but I make no guarantees. It
might be possible to edit the file using AbiWord's Style Modifier; I
find the manual way simplest.

Notepad inserts incorrect characters when opening a .awt format file, so
you should use a program like the DOS 'edit' command.

Something for you to think about anyway.

Cheers,
Greg
