I have manually maintained & updated this machine for so many years that
it no longer resembles the original Linux distribution. I think
it began life as RH 6.x.

How does Abiword figure out which spell checker to use? How does
enchant figure into it? Maybe there are configuration options
I should try. Or maybe just updating aspell and/or ispell would do
the trick. Both seem to exist on this machine.
