I have precisely the same problems (both of them), running the same
versions (XP and abiWord 2.0.5). I have always had the WYSIWYG/print
discrepancy, but not the MSWord conversion problem. Since the change to XP
was accompanied by the office switch from Word/Office 2000 to Office 2003,
and abiWord 2.0.5 came out shortly thereafter, I decided to live with the
problems rather than try to narrow down the problem. Note, that I did not
have the MSWord conversion problem with abiWord 2.0.2.

Subject: MS Windows AbiWord not as Wysiwyg as it should be; also problem
with .doc compatibility
Hello,
I am running AbiWord v. 2.05 on windows XP. I've noticed that what I see in
the window when I specify "print layout" for the view isn't quite what I get
when I print it. It's as if the page formatting or, possibly, the font used
by AbiWord is slightly different from the one used when printing. The page
layout and/or typesetting is a little different, so that the number of words
on each line is not the same.
Consequently, there is no way to tell if something will fit on one page or
not until you actually print it.
When I save something as a .doc or .rtf and then look at it with MSWord
2000, it seems to display the same way it prints when printed from AbiWord.
In other words, the only way to see the printed layout without printing the
document is to look at it with MSWord.
On a slightly different topic -- If I save a document as a .doc and look at
it in MSWord 2000, I find that sometimes MSWord opens it as a text document.
I can see a bunch of what I assume are MSWord commands rather than my
document. The same thing happens sometimes if I create a document in MSWord
and open it with AbiWord. (My guess is that I can always get around this by
using rich text format instead of .doc format, and my guess is also that
complete compatibility with MSWord .doc format is a moving target, so I
won't be offended if this is something that just can't be fixed.)
I'd appreciate any insight anyone can give into these problems, expecially
the first one.
Regards,
Stuart Soloway
