No one believed me when I told them that users just dont read the messages
in the installer! You just cant win sometimes.

It used to be that Abiword would automatically associate itself with .doc
and .rtf and .abw files but too many users didn't read the messages and
were surprised when their word documents were no longer associated with
Microsoft Word but were instead associated with Abiword so that option was
    turned off in the installer.
I thought that .abw documents would still all be associated with Abiword
by default but I dont have an installer handy to check if that is still
the case, I'll have to check later and make sure.

The simplest solution to your problem is to reinstall Abiword but this
time in the installation options make sure to choose to associate Abiword
with .abw files and with .doc and .rtf too if you want.

    Hope that helps.

    Sincerely
