Thanks for the help, but I feel a little dumb.  AbiWord installed a copy of 
itself to the desktop which I used without looking.  The problem was 
that AbiWord was having problems finding .dll's such as Glib.  I copied 
them all into the Windows directory and it solved the problem  Sorry to 
not be more careful.  The .wpd documents come in a little grabled, but I 
am not complaining.
