What is the output of:
enchant-lsmod
enchant-lsmod -lang
Also, what aspell packages do you have installed?
rpm -qa |grep aspell
Spell checking should work with the versions of packages that came with
mandrake 10.0, which are:
abiword-2.0.3-2mdk
libenchant1-1.1.2-1mdk
enchant-1.1.2-1mdk
Also, where did you get 2.0.6? Are you sure that's not a mandrake 9.2
package? There's a 2.1.5 package for mandrake 10.0 on
http://www.eslrahc.com/10.0/
It's best to always use the package for your specific version of the
distro.
Also make sure that the language for the document (tools, set language)
is set to your preferred language, and that you have the aspell package
for it installed.
To avoid confusing, you can first "select all", then set the language. I
had the same weird behaviour when the top of the document was set to
Dutch, while the rest of the document was set to English.
