> Woah, there, as an MLA-format kind of person, I'm thinking, "Let's not jump into a single style set." Abiword does need to remain flexible. Besides, what does Chicago know about style; have you *SEEN* the Picasso?

Eric: You're right! There's no top-dog editorial stylesheet in North
America, let alone worldwide, and I wouldn't want AbiWord to fall prey
to a single stylesheet even if it were my favorite. Still, if there is a
universe of stylesheets, there are some features of AbiWord that violate
most of them -- and that long, centered footnote separator is one of
them. (I'm pretty sure that MLA frowns on that, too.) Flexibility should
be the standard -- but while AbiWord develops toward flexibility,
immutable defaults shouldn't look weird in most style paradigms, like
that separator line.
(For now, you can export your AbiWord document into Word or WordPerfect
or OpenOffice.org and the separator is automatically reformatted as
short and flush-left; print from there.)
I acknowledge that worrying about the length and justification of a
footnote separator line is almost the perfect definition of "anal." But
that's not trivial for someone who is choosing software to meet anal
standards.
