A problem with tabs somehow managed to sneak into the stable branch, and
if you can go up or down a version the problem should go away.
This has been reported in bugzilla a few times, I failed to spot it and
added a duplicate to the list, suffice to say this is a known issue.

Well unless you have a really good reason you probably should have just
left it there and made life easier for yourself, the American dictionary
has larger coverage than the English one and half the time I cant remember
and I think I am doing pretty well if I at least spell it correctly in one
dialect. (gray? grey? aagh)
The Language settings default to en-US, if you set the langauge of
Normal.awt to en-GB that should probably do the trick and you wont get
warnings about en-US anymore.
A less thourough approach is to Select All and then choose Tools Set
Language and mark all the text as en-GB and that will sort out any text
that thinks it is en-US.

It is really silly of me to try and answer questions without a copy of
abiword in front of me and a decent internet connection with which to
search the archives. (Translation: I dont know.)
If you are in a hurry for answers try searching using google:
margins site:abisource.com
or such like.
You might find the answers you are looking for in bugzilla

If you are feeling adventurous you might help us with Beta testing and try
of the Unstable builds (preferably 1.9.1). It is better in many ways but
still in need of plenty of testing so that it will be nice and stable when
2.0 is declared.
