I had this problem too (or my mom did anyway).

I don't remember exactly what worked but you might try the latest
    version here:
    http://pino.frontisterion.nl/uwog/abiword/

The version I have from here crashes on close and gives font error
messages on startup and won't save settings but it's better than
    invisible text.

    There's also some info here:
    http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-8.0-Manual/release-notes/x86/

    To quote:
Certain third party applications, such as the Adobe® Acrobat Reader®,
may not function correctly (or crash upon startup) because they lack
support for Unicode locales. Until third party developers provide such
support in their products, you may work around this issue by setting the
LANG environment variable at the shell prompt to C prior to typing the
    application name.
    For example:

    env LANG=C abiword

I don't remember if that worked for me though so I put these lines in my
    /usr/bin/Abiword file:

    LANG=en_US.ISO8859-1
    export LANG

That fixes the invisible text but I think that screws up the spellcheck
which annoyed my mom who can't spell.
