Ahh... I see. I got it to work by moving the plugins directory to
usr/local/abiword/share/AbiSuite/AbiWord.
Apparently I misunderstood while reading the README file that comes with
abiword-plugins source. I thought the --prefix argument needs to be the same
with the I specified when configuring abiword.
