    Not all sure about abiword, but the GIMP has this
    feature and that source code is open. I don't why
    I'm jumping in on this as neither of these topics
    (pdf form fill or document "acquire") is currently
    of interest to me or, I imagine, more than a very
    few AbiWord users.
