Command line use: Avoiding crash dialog

I'm using AbiWord from the command line from within a Perl script:

    abiword --print 'output.ps' input.abw

Of course, I'm doing this under X. I'm using .99.4, since the later versions
seem to have trouble with Mandrake (this particular system runs on Mandrake
8.2). Every now and then a file gets in the queue which is a blank file or a
malformed file. When that happens and I run AbiWord with the line above, I
get a dialog box that pops up under X. The script stops, since I'm not
running Abi in the background. Is there any way I can just have Abi print an
error message to either STDERR or STDIN instead of poping up a dialog box?
(That way I can capture the error message and command line so I can put it in
a log file for later examination.)

    Thanks.

    Hal
