    You're not alone, I've experienced an almost identical problem.

    See 'Abiword segfault when run under non-root account' in the
    archives.

    This is on a stock Suse8.0 machine.

    I agree, it's a very puzzling problem. Unfortunately, I don't
    have any answers or suggestions of what to do about it. You have
    saved me a bit of time, though, by checking that the absence of
    the gnome libraries is not the problem. Thanks :-)

    I'm willing to help test any potential solutions, but would need
    some guidance. (ie bug fix in cvs etc).
