Could this possibly be an automake version problem.  Are you perhaps running version 1.5.  If so, you might try 1.4.  Your errors are jarring my memory, I do believe I had similar problems when I installed 1.5, which were resolved when I reverted to version 1.4.  I do not believe it is a kernel problem.
