AbiWord crashes

    Good morning.

I'm a new user of AbiWord, and newly subscribed to this list.

I had AbiWord 0.99-1 installed on a virgin SuSE 8.0 (Intel) Linux system. It
ran successfully but was crashing frequently. Being a coder myself (though in
Java, PHP, and SQL, not much C++), it naturally occurred to me to go get the
latest version to see if the crashes were fixed.

SuSE doesn't have an update yet, but I found a build by "jeo" (initials?) on
the AbiWord downloads page. That segfaulted while trying to install with
"rpm -U". So I uninstalled ("rpm --erase") the original SuSE RPM, and did an
"rpm --install" on the new one. Everything was fine. Unfortunately, the
program now crashes immediately upon initialization.

So, I backed out the RPM and decided to try a source build with no RPM on the
machine. I have glib/gtk 1.2-10, by the way, unmodified from the SuSE distro
media, and I have the GNOME developer kits from the same media. No patches.

The source code builds and installs fine, but again it crashes immediately
upon initialization. The error log is:

    /usr/local/bin/abiword: line 67: 1095 Aborted $ABISUITE_LIBEXEC/AbiWord_d "$@"

I'm not enough of a C++ wizard to use gdb to debug this thing, especially since
the source code is entirely unfamiliar to me.

I'm assuming someone has seen this error before. I'm going to go search on
Google, but with keywords like "abiword" and "line 67" I'll bet it's tough
to sift through the pile of false hits. Anyone care to enlighten me as to
what might be wrong here? BTW, I've been to the README, the changelog, and
the FAQs. I'll also try Bugzilla, though I have only browsed it cursorily
    so far.

    TIA for any suggestions.

    Scott
