the file associations thing is "funky" (not in a good way)
if you open abiword first, and then open the document from within Abiword
do you still get an extra window opening?
if you had said 2 windows opened (including the document) i would have
been less suprised, but 3? i have had similar occurances of extra blank
windows, but i did not figure out what might be causing it.
