HI Bernard,
AbiWord can have up to 26 different language in a document
simultaneously and correctly spell check them all (except for "color" in
Proper English domains but that is another story). Go to the abiword
download site on sourceforge, look in the abispell section of the site,
and choose your language for download.
Now we, the official abiword maintainers. will officially provide support
for these spell files. However abiword can be made to use the
pspell/aspell spell checking system devised by Kevin Atckinson. This is a
compile time option that was not chosen for the 0.9.6.1 release. aspell is
superior to ispell in many ways for English but is not so good for
languages other than English. Also apsell uses C++ features that are not
correctly implemented by the Microsoft C++ compiler so we can't use it
for Windows. Also the number of the Languages supported by spell/aspell is
far less than ispell and finally many Linux distributions incorrectly
configure pspell/aspell so that non-English dictionaries don't work with
that system.
So the upshot of all this is that if you want a Language to spell check,
just hunt for the appropriate rpm or *.exe in the abispell section of our
download site, install it on your computer, and it will happily Just Work
with abiword 0.9.6.1 :-)
Cheers
Martin
